New Blogging Page

I've re-homed my blog; you can now find it at:

The reason for this is that I wanted to house all my blogs under one roof, but still have multiple blog streams, so the one above will take you to my own website for the Nine Acres IT Feed.

Cisco UC

Yesterday was an interesting day; had the meeting I'd been waiting for regard our telephone system upgrade; everyone was upbeat and very interested and excited in what the Cisco UC could allow us to do and our plans for it.

Final quotes were requested yesterday also, so I'm looking for a quick and smooth sign off before the summer holidays.

NComputing

Looking at some N and M 300 modules.

Attempted this a few years back, but it looks like they've resolved the network video streaming issues.

Skype all round

Today we launched our teaching staff into Skype for their classrooms. Once the basics were covered they were let loose to play and call each other. Quite a lot of frivolity.

Guest WI-FI

During the afternoon of Friday just passed, we are now testing a guest WI-FI profile on our infrastructure. A couple of staff members have had their phones and iPads linked to said profile, so we'll monitor and go from there.

A late night/early morning restore

After an evening out, on my return I found that our new website was throwing up an interesting error that wouldn't go away - even after a restart.

So decided to restore the site from backup, and hay presto, all appears to be working as expected once more.

New website

The school's new website went live for the 1st of January 2013 - its been in the development stage for about the last 6 or so months; everything that was put into the old one was entered at the same time into the new; this made it look a bit more filled out rather than an empty shell at launch.

I've opted to use WordPress; its an amazing application that adds to our "Single Sign-On" ethos and integrated well with out Active Directory. WordPress also makes it much easier for our visitors to find stuff; practically everything is searchable.

Staff will have write access to their relevant pages so that it becomes their responsibility to keep their pages up to date rather than IT.

There are a few things yet to go on, but they'll be done in good time.

HHD Failure - 1st of the year

A new year isn't a new year without an HDD failure; thankfully its RAID so the server is carrying on as normal, and I'm waiting for a hot swappable replacement.
